This is a part of my piece, 'Hoho the crooked clown', and was composed as part of my school assessments with weekly tutelage from Mr Hamilton, who is extremely helpful and resourceful. I have named it in such a way because this piece to me is rather quirky and playful - like a deranged whimsical clown...

“Focus” is a short study for solo flute. The opening 5-note gesture generates much of the subsequent material with an emphasis on the interval of the third. If there is a tonal centre, it is A, with a secondary centre on C about halfway through (just after the climax point). Included in the piece are a couple of simple ‘extended’ techniques: speaking while playing, and breath noise. The piece ends by dissolving into the sound of the player's breath...

Dear Mary,
I've just seen in the CANZ newsletter that you are having a call for New Zealand flute works. I have written a short piece for solo flute, which has been performed by Ingrid Culliford and Luca Manghi, which I would like to send to you.
It is about Grade 7-8, and 4 pages long, so maybe not entirely suitable as per your guidelines, but it would be wonderful to have it reviewed or available on the website...
