Density 21.5Andy Findon solo flute, piccolo, alto and baritone saxophone. Density 21.5, the long awaited solo CD of Andy Findon has arrived. We have known for a long time about Andy’s incredible versatility in being able to switch from jazz based to classical, sax to flute and he doesn’t disappoint here. There are no less than 8 World Premieres by British composers creating an eclectic mix of works for flute, piccolo, alto flute and baritone saxophone. There are 2 works by Andy Scott - fast establishing himself a reputation as one of the most exciting composers of today - KBM for flute, which begins in majestic and elegant fashion, then leading through into a groove based middle section and finally returning to the opening majestic figures. Eighteen is written for baritone saxophone and is a punchy, energetic, dynamic piece, a great vehicle for Andy’s deep sonorous tone. There are two excellent and very accessible additions to the solo flute repertoire: Geoff Eales 11th Commandment and David Cullen’s Sonata. The Eales is an exciting, energetic and rhythmically complex work. The Cullen takes us from a reflective mood in the first movement, to a two voice lively motive in the second and a gentle lilting andante to finish. The three excellent Nyman pieces are all World Premieres and include Song For Tony, recorded twice here on flute and saxophone. Sitting slightly oddly in the middle of all these Premieres, is J.S. Bach’s Partita in A minor, but it does provide us with a gentle, refreshing and enjoyable interlude and the final piece is Density 21.5 by Varese, a classic and well known twentieth century work. Any solo recordings are difficult to promote, but there is much to enjoy here - wonderful flute playing and exciting to hear so many totally accessible new works. CD Review by Clare Southworth
