Letters to the Editor

Dear Friends,
For more than 25 years, a group of us have been compiling a flute encyclopedia. It was originally to be published in paper format, but electronic events have overtaken us and we have all become busier too. A few months ago, in conjunction with Just Flutes, the British specialist flute shop, we decided to make available for public use what has been done so far...

Magnus Irving Båge - "Flute Music" Print E-mail
Written by Flute Focus

Magnus Irving Bage "Flute Music"Swedish flautist Magnus Irving Båge’s impressive debut recording combines favourites from the twentieth-century French flute repertoire with some lesser-known works, making it a valuable addition to any flautist’s collection.

The disc opens with an excellent rendition of two charming miniatures by Sofia Gubaidulina, Sounds of the Forest and Allegro Rustico. Eduard Tubin’s Flute Sonata is a substantial addition to the repertoire, and the third movement is truly beautiful. If the name Lars Edlund is familiar to you, it is most likely due to his sight-singing tutors Modus Novus and Modus Vetus and not his Flute Sonata. However, the piece is quite striking, particularly in the delicate textures set up between the two instruments, and Båge’s performance is especially sensitive here.

The standout on the album is Roussel’s Deux Poèmes de Ronsard - Roussel’s unusual songs are sung beautifully by Madeleine Barringer. Solid performances of Jolivet’s Chant de Linos, Dutilleux’s Sonatine, two of Roussel’s Joeurs de Flûte, and Messiaen’s Merle Noire round out this disc. Båge’s slightly laboured technique and insistent vibrato are distracting at times, but his stellar intonation and vivacious interpretations help this album stand out from the crowd.
