A Dictionary for the Modern Flutist Susan J. Maclagan Publisher Scarecrow Press, Inc, Maryland, USA ISBN: 978-0-8108-6711-6 Over recent years, Susan has very occasionally popped up on The Flute List with queries for information, so many of the flute community knew that Susan was hard at work on a very ambitious project. Suffice it to say that this finished product far exceeds everyone’s wildest dreams. This handsome book is a truly comprehensive dictionary of all flute-related terminology. Susan addresses the simple to the most complex with consistently clear and succinct explanations, thoroughly cross-referenced, including equally easy-to-understand images as appropriate. The comprehensive appendices would comprise an invaluable book by themselves. The dictionary section includes absolutely everything flute-related that I could think to look up except one; a completely reasonable omission, Argentium is a recently invented type of silver with limited application in flute construction after this book was in production. In short, this book is simply a must-have for every teacher, library and serious student! |
