FLUTES AND THEIR PLAYERS A flute has many parallels with its player: • Both have a tube down the middle that sometimes makes noises, not always pleasant. • Both have a hole at the upper end to which one’s lips may be applied to give pleasure to oneself or others, but not always both. • No further comment should be made on the hole at the lower end... • Between the two ends are various attached or removable appendages, which can be useful, are usually well-designed for their purpose, and are sometimes attractive. • The name of its maker, as well as decorations and ornaments, may sometimes be added to the body of either, in various and sometimes surprising places. • Both should be stripped and cleaned from time to time. • Both sometimes need extra or replacement padding. • Sometimes either or both may have a screw loose. • Either or both may be hard to get started during wintry conditions. • When reprimanded by a conductor over intonation or timing of an entry, each invariably blames the other. • But of course, when praised by a critic, each claims full credit. |
