Piccolo Craft – (A Guide To Pleasurable Piccolo Playing For Enthusiastic Flautists) By Andrew Lane Print E-mail
Written by Ingrid Culliford

Piccolo Craft – (A Guide To Pleasurable Piccolo Playing For Enthusiastic Flautists) By Andrew LaneIn this recently published book, Andrew Lane, (Principal Piccolo with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for many years) has drawn from his wealth of experience and his obvious love of the piccolo to bring us insight into the art of piccolo playing. This book is such a pleasure to read, not only for all the useful tips available, but because Andrew has written from a very personal perspective and, as you read through the book, it seems as if you might have stepped into his studio for a one on one lesson.

The book dwells on a wide range of associated topics, from breathing (useful for flute players, not just those with an interest in the piccolo!), tuning, and playing quietly, to practical advice on choosing an instrument, checking the set-up, and handling yourself under pressure in the orchestra. Again and again, I felt as if I was attending a master-class given by one who is passionate about playing, orchestral music and the instrument itself.

The book is called a “Teach-Yourself Piccolo Method”, clearly intended for flautists with some prior experience and understanding of the intricacies of playing. There are many useful exercises, warm ups and problem solving tips as well as specific repertoire suggestions.

This book is a ‘must have’ for aspiring orchestral flute players. It is available from specialist flute shops in the UK (Top Wind, Just Flutes and All Flutes Plus) or from Andrew himself via e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
