Letters to the Editor

Dear Mary,
I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know how much I appreciated you publishing Maurice O’Brien’s article on Musicophilia. It was beautifully written and captured the essence of the book well...

Flute Fingering Puzzle

For each note printed along the top of the grid below, work out its standard flute fingering and follow the flute key list on the left to circle the correct letters underneath the note (the first column has been shaded for you) . Once you have finished, read the circled letters from left to right, top to bottom to read a quote from Arthur Honegger.

"The public doesn't want new music: the main thing it demands of a composer is that he is dead."

Can you move the quavers into the circles occupied by the minims, and vice versa, in seven moves? A ‘move’ consists of sliding one note along one or more lines from circle to circle without entering an occupied circle . You might like to use different-coloured buttons to solve this.

Number the circles 1 to 8 from left to right, top to bottom. then one possible sequence of moves is:
6-2
1-5-6
3-7-1-5
8-4-3-7-1
2-8-4-3
6-2-8
5-6

Riddles

1. How can you throw your flute so that it goes a short distance, comes to a stop, then reverses and goes the opposite way? You cannot tie anything to your flute or hit it with anything.

2. At my school flute choir’s concert not one girl in the choir played a note, but the concert was a great success.

Can you explain?

  1. My flute weighs 200 grams plus half its own weight . What is the weight of my flute?
  2. My marching band marched at 5 km/hour from one end of the street to the other . We then turned around and marched back to our starting point . How fast would we have to march back along the street to average 10 km/hour for the round- trip?
